Discord Adds User Profile Customization Features

Discord has been about games and gaming only for too long, it seems. Now it’s getting closer to traditional social services and messengers. The new addition in the app may seem small, but it signifies bigger things to come. Now users have a little more freedom when it comes to profile customization.

There is not much when compared to social giants like Facebook. The main addition is the “About Me” field that contains up to 190 characters (less than a tweet today). The field may contain emoji and links, so you can share your profiles on other social media that may appear more informative.

Another thing to enjoy is customizable color schemes. If you don’t like the default one, you can choose your favorite colors. When someone visits your page, it will be shown in your colors to them. So pick meaningful ones.

Nitro subscribers are privileged again. They have an option of uploading a personalized profile banner, and it can even be a GIF animation. It’s rather a vanity feature: look, I have Nitro! But it can also make a profile very expressive, and we believe some users may think of subscribing just to have a blinking animated banner on top of their page.

Some of these customization options have been available to those on PC for some time since late June. But now, mobile app users on both Android and iOS can enjoy these features too. It pushes Discord even closer to traditional social media and messengers and follows the general trend that brought video games out of the ghetto into mainstream culture.

The introduction of the new personalization options began yesterday, on August 3. If you don’t see these features in your Discord app, try updating it manually and, if there’s no update yet, wait for a few days. The update is rolling out gradually worldwide, and no wonder some users will get it later than others.
