Heroes of the Dark is a Victorian-themed RPG that features the strange world where humans, vampires, and werewolves coexist. But not always peacefully. Your team of various species is here to prevent the worst. Download Heroes of the Dark for Android and iOS and build your kingdom in this universe of nocturnal creatures!
The game is not very dynamic, rather it’s slow-paced (except for combat episodes). It lets you appreciate all the details in pseudo-Victorian town, enjoy the way the monsters are drawn, see suits and weapons, buildings, and the night sky with the shattered Moon. If you play on an iPad or a top-tier Android tablet, you will fully rate the visuals that would have looked great on PlayStation or Xbox.
The size of the game is rather moderate (slightly above 1 GB), as most of what happens online. You don’t need an extra powerful device to play it. You can install Heroes of the Dark on any phone or tablet with iOS9.0 or Android 5.0 or higher.
The controls are simpler than ever. Between combats, you just tap the elements you need (enter rooms, collect or spend crystals, choose upgrades, and so on). The most interesting part of the game is tactical combat. All you need to do (in no hurry) is to position your units right. It seems easy to put archers behind and melee fighters ahead of your rows.
As you start the game, it leads you through the first stages with a wizard that just won’t let you go wrong. It may seem boring, especially if you have played some similar RPG. Still, the instructions you have also explain the setting, so going through them introduces the world to you.
In the place that resembles Victorian London, you explore strange relationships between three races – humans, vampires, and werewolves. The all-out war seems inevitable when a mortal man wakes up a vampire who has spent recent years asleep. After that, they predictably meet a werewolf who joins them in their quest. With this team, you build a headquarter where you grow crystals for upgrades and go fighting enemies.
On the way, you learn the unusual nearly idle combat style, upgrade your characters, and unravel the story of what happens between the three races. By the way, what happened to the Moon, and why are its shards so important for the story? Last but not least: there are clans that give their members bonuses, as well as 5v5 PvP battles.
In this RPG, you can upgrade your characters in various ways. For completing quests, you receive crystals and other rewards necessary for upgrades. But, as in most games of this kind, they are never sufficient to upgrade quickly.
In this game, though, you will probably want to progress, as the story that unfolds is at least unusual, and the setting is very attractive. The writing is okay, making you want to proceed further, even though the narrative is linear.
It’s one of the most ambitious mobile RPG by Gameloft, well designed and written. Alas, free download means pay-to-win or grind-to-win. In addition, the game has too many bugs, so wait for updates to fix them. Otherwise, Heroes of the Dark is a gift for fans of narrative-driven games.
